They can produce very uniform groove spacings and when the "fat is taken out" ( the later smoothing of the grooves) there appears to be nothing more than a light swirl around the note. But inside the steel, it remains compressed and dampens the vibrations between adjacent notes. The only alternative to hammer grooving that I am aware of, is the bore pan. Here a series of holes are drilled around the note to separate it.
I am curious, how many pans have you built? Do they sound good? How many drums have you trashed in the process? Many people on the board think, or dream, about making their own pan. But we don't hear much about anyones actual success or failures. That is, from novices. There are some well trained, long apprenticed and professional builders who contribute here. I would like to hear more about your experiences.
