you are looking at a pan grooved by a very experienced builder. Grooving with a hand punch is harder than it looks, and takes tremendously strong and trained hand muscles. The pan you were looking at was grooved by hand, probably using a punch that was precisely shaped - a flat punch .20" -.25" dia. with the edges slightly rounded so that it doesn't cut the steel. I don't groove by hand myself, I use an air hammer.
You also said that you have access to barrels. The problem with used barrels (in the US at least) is that the US DOT (Dept. of Transportation) requires barrel makers to stamp a bunch of letters and numbers in the good end of the barrel. If you look close you can see that these letters are actually slightly cut into the barrel. A good rule is (from Ellie Mannette) that if you can click your fingernail on a letter, it is cut too deep to be able to sink a drum. You can get by sinking if you don't go beyond 5 or maybe 6 inches though. good Luck!
