put the rubber on the stick with silicone grease of spray.
use sharp blade (utility knife).to cut off amt required.
that should do the trick!

: I found tubing for replacing the rubber tip on my mallets but I can't cut them straight. I tried using a scissors, a utility knife even a tool for cutting tile. Does anyone have any suggetions for cutting the rubber straight?.
